Chess Club
Students may join the Chess Club starting in second grade. The club meets immediately after school. The first eight weeks are for the beginners and then the advanced players join. Students love the competition during the last weeks. The final game is celebrated as everyone watches the last two students compete to be the school chess champion.Christmas Show
Under the direction of the music teacher and with the support of their classroom teachers, students in Kindergarten through 4 th grade perform a Christmas Show in mid-December. Practices are held during the school day, with a performance during the school day for the student body and in the evening for family and friends.Choir
Students in grades 4-8 are invited to participate in the school choir. The choir leads the congregation in song at the weekly school Masses. Students who wish to do so are encouraged to become cantors for these liturgies.English Festival
The English Festival is sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English. They select a list of books to read and all participants have to read each book on the list. Each year, the 8 th grade students at Saint Therese School participate in this event as part of their Language Arts curriculum.
Students are divided into teams of 4 or 5. Each team represents Saint Therese School. On the day of the festival, students travel by bus to Duquesne University where teams then compete with other school teams from across Western Pennsylvania in various events that show knowledge of the books. Prizes are awarded to the teams, but the best prize is the participation in this event. While at the Festival, participants from all schools get an opportunity to see and hear the featured author.
The English Festival is typically held in May.Field Day
Field Day provides students in grades K-8 the opportunity to participate in competitive sports and games. The activities scheduled for the day are varied and exciting for all age levels. Parents are invited to help with the event by supervising and/or running the games. At the conclusion of the day, the Parents Association (VIP) provides treats for all students.
Field Day is held in the final weeks of the school year.Forensics
Saint Therese School sponsors a Forensics team as part of the Western Pennsylvania Forensics League. Students in grades 5-8 are invited to participate in the Saint Therese School Forensics Team. Students practice public speaking in the areas of: declamation, drama, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu, multiple reading, poetry and prose. The students earn points in two rounds of competition, ultimately receiving a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place based on their individual point totals. A variety of neighboring parochial and public schools participate in the Western Pennsylvania Forensics League.Instrumental Band
Students in grades 4-8 are invited to participate in the Instrumental Band. Students have thirty-minute lessons, once a week during the school day along with a group lesson. The students typically perform two concerts a year, one at Christmas and the other in Spring.
There is a separate fee for this program, which falls under the direction of the Diocese of Pittsburgh Instructional Music Program.
Invention Convention
Students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in the Invention Convention. With guidance from teachers and their parents, students work in teams or individually to create an invention that solves a common problem. The students present their invention gallery style at Seton LaSalle High School.
The Invention Convention takes place in late Winter or early Spring.
Living Stations of the Cross
Students in our 8 th grade class make up the cast of the Living Stations of the Cross. Through word, actions and song, our students prayerfully lead us through the events of Holy Week. The students rehearse during school hours, and present the Living Stations for family and friends in the evening and for the student body prior to dismissal for the Easter Holiday. The students also lead the Living Stations on Good Friday for parishioners.
Science Fair
A science fair is held annually for middle school students during Catholic Schools Week. Each student presents an experiment as their science project in the form of a report, display board, or models they designed, studied and/or created.
The Science Fair is held in the Winter months.
Spelling Bee
Saint Therese School holds two spelling bees per year. One bee is for students in grades 1-3 while the other bee is for students in grades 4-6. The winners in each group receive a cash prize and a gold, silver or bronze medal. The winner of the spelling bee in grades 4-6 moves on to represent Saint Therese School in the Diocesan Spelling Bee.
The school Spelling Bees are held in March, with the Diocesan Bee taking place in May.
Spring Musical
The Spring Musical is open to students in grades 4-8. The show is announced following Christmas Break along with a schedule for cast auditions. Working closely with the music teacher, students practice and perfect the material for performance. Rehearsals are held after school, with the performances held in the evening at Steel Valley High School Auditorium.
Students also comprise the stage crew, preparing the sets and props for the show under the guidance of our art teacher.
Student Leaders
The organizational goals is to foster school pride through student planning and implementation of school activities. The student leaders sponsor social events and plan for school outreach activities to benefit the community and organize fundraisers for various charities and mission efforts.
Walk-A-Thon
Students look forward to the annual Walk-a-Thon held each fall. Students walk laps around the Saint Therese School and Parish campus in a fun, relaxed, spirit filled environment. All money raised by students through donations is to update technology throughout the school. Prizes are awarded to individuals and classes. Many school families volunteer to assist with this fun-filled day.
